The conceptual framework used was the social learning theory because social learning theory focuses on learning that occurs within a social context. It considers that people learn from one another, including such concepts as observational learning, imitation and modelling. This study adopted the quantitative research method. The sample size that was used in this study was a total of 30 participants, 14 males and 16 females which were drawn from all the generic classes at the college. A structured self administered questionnaire was used as an instrument for data collection. The questionnaire was piloted at Kamuzu college of Nursing, Blantyre campus. Data was analysed using the statistical package for computer science (SPSS).Graphs, tables and pie charts were used to present the findings. Permission to conduct the study was obtained from the Kamuzu college of Nursing Research committee and the principal. The findings in the study revealed that 53% of the subjects were
females. This signifies that the study was gender biased. The findings also showed that all the participants were youth. The findings revealed that 86.7% of the subjects indicated that they know something about peer education. When further asked what they know, most of the subjects know that peer education is the transfer of knowledge and skills among peers to influence behaviour change. 93% of the subjects know that there are life skills peer educators at the college and they can utilize them. The findings also revealed that 1 60% of the subjects indicated that they know something on life skills. When further asked what they know, 56.7% of the subjects indicated that life skills deals with decision making, self esteem and critical thinking. 3.3% of the subjects indicated that life skills deals with challenges and issues of our every day life. The study findings further revealed that there are several factors that make the students not to utilize the life skills peer educators. majority(38.5%) of the subjects indicated that life skills peer educators are not known to the students at the college. 34.5% of the subjects indicated that life skills peer educators are not active whilst 11.5% of the subjects indicated that life skills peer educators are not role models who can influence behaviour change. The study findings also revealed that the factors that hinder students from utilization of life skills peer educators are the same as factors that make the students not to utilize the life skills peer educators at the college. The study findings further revealed that 90% of the subjects indicated that the services provided by life skills peer educators are not effective. Some of the recommendations are; publicity of the life skills peer educators and the peer educators club to the students and public, and that the college should identify a lecture to coordinate peer education activities at the college. |
