description Young people represent almost half of all HIV infections worldwide. It is estimated that 1000,OOO adults and children are living with HIV/AIDS in Malawi. (National AIDS Commission, 2006). Despite education on abstinence and government's effort to combat HIV/AIDS, a lot of the youth get infected with HIV through sexual intercourse and also drop out from school due to unwanted pregnancy. These youth start sex at age younger than 12 years. The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore factors influencing practice of abstinence from sex as a method of HIV/AIDS prevention among secondary school students. The data has been presented in form of frequency distribution tables, percentages, graphs, pie charts and in narrative form. The study will contribute towards body of knowledge on factors influencing abstinence from sex. The study has revealed that the youth have some gaps in knowledge and hold some misconceptions about HIV/AIDS which hinders them from engaging in effective abstinence from sex, some youth have negative attitude towards abstinence from sex which has an implication that these few may influence others as the youth are strongly driven by peer pressure. There are many factors that hinder the youth from abstaining from sex including social economic status, peer pressure and family problems
