description Delay in accessing professional delivery care from the hospital predispose pregnant women to a number of health hazards associated with labor complications (Klein S, 1999). These complications can either be fatal, or can lead to some disabilities to the mother or the new born child or both if not well managed. There are several factors that contribute to delay in accessing delivery care from the hospital among pregnant women. This qualitative study was intended to seek a clear understanding of such factors particularly in Ntcheu district. A convenience sample of ten (1 0) participants from the district was recruited into the study. The participants were pregnant women who just delivered their babies on their way to the hospital during the time of the data collection. Data was collected by using interview guides. A pilot study was conducted at Mchinji district hospital prior to the actual study so as to ensure validity, reliability and feasibility of the study. Analysis of the data was done manually by descriptive statistics and content analysis. Findings of the study revealed four major issues that emerged as the cause of pregnant women's delay to access timely delivery care from the hospital. These were delay in making a decision to go to the hospital after labor had started, poverty, poor transportation system and inefficient health services at the health facility visited at fist when labor began.
