description | This is a qualitative study which is going to look at the knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of male inmates towards homosexuality and HIV transmission at Zomba Central Prison.
Homosexuality has been reported in prisons throughout the world and Malawi in particular. The illegality of homosexuality has been understood to pose as a major stumbling block to fight HIV and AIDS in sub-Saharan where two third of all the world people infected with HIV are. In
prisons, where convicts are incarcerated the practice has since been overlooked and are being denied of health services that target the prevention of HIV and AIDS.
The study will assess the knowledge of inmates on homosexuality, that is, study will find out if the inmates know about homosexuality. Secondly, it will look at the factors that that lead the
inmates to engage in homosexuality practices. Thirdly, the study will document the views of inmates on the links between homosexuality and HIV transmission. Finally, it will assess the preventive measures that are used by the inmates in order to prevent HIV and AIDS.
The study will adopt a descriptive approach. Data will be collected from a sample of 15 male inmates who will be ranging from 18-45 years, using a questionnaire. Before the study, a pilot 1 study will be carried out at Maula Prison among male inmates. The data will be analysed manually and content analysis will be used to come up with the main points from the responses. |
