description | This descriptive qualitative study was conducted in Blantyre at some Banja La Mtsogolo (BLM) centres and on some traditional healers. It aimed at investigating the sexual problems among married couples visiting these facilities.
A descriptive study design was used and data were collected through face to face in depth interviews of 5 clinicians, 4 clients with sexual problems and some traditional healers based in different locations of Blantyre, Structured interview guide was utilised in the data collection. Data was analysed manually using key themes based on specific objectives.
The results showed that sexual problems were severe among married couples, men and women and it is a public health concern. The study also revealed that people with sexual problems have different treatment seeking behaviour which lead to some patronizing traditional healers and others seeking assistance from health workers. The study found out that different factors were responsible for sexual problems among married couples and some of the factors included marital problems, our culture, age, financial hiccups etc. It also revealed that clients with sexual problems suffer psychologically and socially so they need support from health professional.
Basing on the research findings, the researcher recommends that Sex education is a vital tool for improvement of sexual problems in the country because it will break the silence surrounding sex and people will have true information which will encourage people to open up and disclose their sexual problems thereby getting necessary assistance. It is also recommended that to overcome problems such as lack of knowledge or feelings of shame and inadequacy among health professionals, it may be useful to give the topic of sexuality and sexual problems a higher status in basic nursing and medical education. Also, key questions on how to start and maintain discussions on sexuality should be developed, evaluated and maintained.
Limitation of the study was that the sample size was small, therefore the results cannot be generalised to all married couples with sexual problems and should be cautiously used. |
