Summary:The aim of the study is to find out the knowledge and perception of mothers on factors contributing to the prevalence of diarrhea in children under the age of 1 year. According to the Malawi Demographic Health Survey (2004) there was a high prevalence of diarrhea in children under the age of I year in Malawi. A descriptive and exploratory qualitative study design will be used. The study will use a purposive sampling technique with a sample of 10 mothers with children under the age of I year at Zingwangwa Health Centre in Blantyre. Data will be collected through in depth interviews using an interview guide which has been developed in English and translated in Chichewa for easy communication. Data will be analysed manually using content analysis. The findings will be presented using tables, graphs and pie charts which will help to draw a conclusion. In order to conduct the study in respect of human dignity, integrity and authority, ethical considerations will be taken into account, by seeking approval from the Research Publication Centre.
