description | The purpose of the study is to explore couples' perception on male involvement in couple HIV testing and counseling in antenatal mothers at Dzaleka Health Centre, Dowa District. A qualitative research design using Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) will be used to generate information. The study will take place in a rural setting of Dowa District. Purposive sampling technique will be used to select participants. A total of 15 participants will be recruited in this study. The subjects will comprise of 5 women of age between 15-49 years who have had at least one pregnancy and had attended antenatal clinic at the hospital. Furthermore, 10 men of age between 20-50 years will be recruited. These age groups have been chosen because it is a reproductive age group in Malawi. More men will be recruited in this study so as to get more views from them since they are the ones who have the problem of not taking part in VCT. Data will be analysed manually using content analysis. The participants will be interviewed using a focus group guide. A letter asking for permission to conduct a study will be sought from the research and publications committee of Kamuzu College of Nursing and a letter asking for permission to conduct a study will be sent to authorities at Dowa District Health Office. Ethical consideration to the participants will be strictly observed during the study.
It is expected that the results will be helpful in promoting male involvement in couple HIV testing and counseling. The results of the study will be sent to Kamuzu College of Nursing and Dowa District Health Office. The findings will also be communicated to the Ministry of Health and Population, Department of Mental Health. It is believed that the findings of this study will benefit the Ministry of Health in policy making towards setting up strategies in scaling up male involvement in couple HIV testing and counseling at antenatal clinic since men are decision makers in their families therefore need to be involved. |
