Summary: | The purpose of this study was to assess the level of knowledge and perception of men on inguinal hernia at Kamuzu Central Hospital. This study used a qualitative approach whereby 10 participants were interviewed. Data was collected using a semi structured interview guide. The data was analysed manually using qualitative analysis technique of classifying words in a text into few categories chosen because of their importance and a calculator, pencil, pen, ruler and paper was used. Demographic data was analysed using a descriptive method and has been presented in pie charts, graphs and tables. All this was done in order to reduce, organize, and give meaning to data. The findings of the study have shown that men do not have enough knowledge on inguinal hernia especially on prevention and the risk factors for the development of inguinal hernia and they reported late for healthcare service. The study also found out beliefs associated with inguinal hernia which include: it attacks those who womanise, it reduces libido, it is associated with witchcraft, it is not treatable at the hospital and you can become infertile. The findings of the study will help the health care workers to give thorough health education pertaining to the condition.
