The general systems theory was used to guide this research. A sample size of 10 mothers with children with Spinabifida admitted at Paediatric department at Kamuzu Central Hospital was used. The subjects were selected through purposeful sampling, data collected was analysed manually and interpreted and illustrated using graphs, tables and diagram. The results have shown that in general all the mothers with children with Spinabifida expressed knowledge deficit on the condition and emotional reactions such as shock, depression, anxiety, worried and disappointment. The results have further revealed that having a child with Spinabifida has an impact on the physical, psychological, spiritual and social well being. Stress was a major problem experienced by all the mothers with children with Spinabfida. The results also reveal that there is delay in treatment at the hospital which makes mothers of children with Spinabifida to observe no improvement 1 when admitted. The results may be used by health workers to sensitize the public on Spinabifida. Policy makers may utilize the findings in making policies regarding prevention of Spinabifida. The patients will also benefit from the results of this study in a way that they will have knowledge on the disease condition, how .to prevent it and their perception will change.
