The study was carried out in Nayuchi area, Traditional Authority Kawinga in Machinga district. The study design used was descriptive quantitative in nature. A sample of thirty (30) conveniently sampled community members, comprising of fifteen (15) males and fifteen (15) females, were recruited for the study.
The participants were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire. Data collected was analysed manually using frequency tables. Permission to

Confidentiality and anonymity of the subjects was adhered to, and all subjects gave an informed consent to participate in the study. Findings of the study revealed that the majority (76.6%) of the respondents had a high level of knowledge regarding causes of cholera; transmission; signs and symptoms and its prevention strategies. However, although the level of knowledge was high, the respondents' practices were so unhygienic that they p redisposed themselves to cholera infection. The findings showed that 53% of the respondents had no toilets, 60% had no access to clean water, and the community hand washing practices were poor. |
