| description | A quantitative study on Knowledge, Practice and Perception of clinicians and nurse/midwives in the provision of Basic Emergency Obstetric Care was conducted in Mulanje district. The purpose of study was to assess knowledge, practice and perception of clinician and nurse/midwives in the provision of Basic Emergency Obstetric Care. The study was conducted at two hospitals, Mulanje district and Mulanje mission and in four health centres, namely: Chonde, Namasalima, Namulenga, and Mpala. The health promotion model was used. The study comprised of n= 30. Twenty were nurse/midwives and ten clinicians. Purposive sampling was used to draw up the sample. Data was collected using a questionnaire which comprised of both open ended and closed questions. Prior to data collection pretesting was done at Bwaila hospital and two health centres, namely Kawale and area 25 to find out validity and reliability of the instrument. Data was analysed manually and presented in frequency tables, pie charts, and graphs using Microsoft excel programme. The results showed that clinicians and nurse/midwives have knowledge in provision of Basic Emergency Obstetric Care despite working under pressure and with low material resources. The study has also shown that the level of education and knowledge base is the pre-requisite to the application of new knowledge into practice.
It was commended to train all clinicians and nurse/midwives in BEmOC, regular supervision by BEmOC trainers and to provide adequate material resources in order
for quality care to be provided hence to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity. |
